Oregon’s premier growing region is turning out a range of excellent Pinot Noirs
The 2023 and 2024 vintages in Oregon’s Willamette Valley continue the state’s remarkable run, marking four years in a row of outstanding and classic Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. For anyone who closely follows Oregon wine, the high quality of the 2021 through 2024 vintages shouldn’t come as a surprise. Except for the wildfire-burdened 2020 growing season, you have to go back to 2013 to find a year that wasn’t truly impressive.
Based on the 2023s I tasted for that report, I gave the vintage a preliminary score of 92–95 points, and after tasting a few hundred more wines over the past year, I’m now certain of its exceptional quality. Having met my highest expectations, the 2023 vintage now earns an overall rating of 95 points, giving it the status of a classic year.
